Pandemic & Pardhi
Pandemic & Pardhi, as a project started with a thought, “How are tribal communities surviving through this pandemic?” Supported by the National Geographic Society Emergency Grant, this thought evolved into a storytelling exploration project. Last Wilderness Foundation (LWF), an organisation working with tribes throughout central India became a bridge connecting the director and National Geographic Explorer, Ishan Sharma, to the Pardhis of Panna and Baigas of Kanha. The Pardhi community was infamous for its hunting traditions. But through intervention by the government and LWF, they have moved away from the jungle and practice alternative sources of livelihood. Pandemic & Pardhi, depicts the reality of tribes who live on the edges of forests and how the pandemic has impacted their livelihoods. A Day In The Life Of Manda, A Waste Worker in Dharamshala
This is the story of Manda, one of many waste workers in Dharamshala. A day in the life of a waste worker is tough. There are hundreds of waste workers, both formal sanitation workers and informal waste pickers, who live and work in every city and town across the country. From picking up trash that you might have littered, to rummaging through your disposed trash bags, to walking barefoot through dumping grounds, and carrying heavy loads of recyclables: it is a hard life. Not only in India, with millions of waste workers, but also in many countries around the world with countless more who make a living doing this every single day. We would like you to take a moment to recognize, appreciate, and respect their hard work, their perseverance, and their ability to push through despite all the odds. Their collective work saves millions of tons of recyclables from ending up in landfills, rivers, and oceans. We do owe them a lot more than we may think. It is time to support them, train them, and uplift them towards a better future. The next time you see a waste worker on the road sweeping it clean or picking waste that someone threw out, take a moment and ask yourself: what could you be doing to make that person’s life a bit better? You can start by reducing what you consume and dispose, by segregating your waste, by composting your organic waste at home, by storing your sanitary and hazardous waste separately, and a hundred other little things. So let’s begin! For more info on our work in Dharamshala, check out our website at: https://wastewarriors.org/what-we-do/... A Cleaner Dharamshala, one Model Ward at a time!
Our Model Ward program in Dharamshala is getting bigger every week! Despite this year’s challenges, we’re slowly working towards transforming Ward #7 Secretariat into a model ward for waste management. Local families and businesses are adopting what we are teaching, and doing their bit to keep their city clean. We’ve been able to engage nearly 600 homes in this ward, and after months of work on the ground, walking door-to-door talking to everyone, over 300 families and 30 businesses are now segregating their waste at source and handing it over to collection vehicles for further segregation into different recyclable and non-recyclable categories. And to top that, by order of the Municipal Corporation, 60 government offices in the city are now segregating and giving their dry waste to our Green Workers! This is the first time this is happening and we’re so happy that we’re able to help the local administration prevent their recyclable waste from ending up in the city’s landfill. We're also so proud of our community ambassadors who learn from us and then talk to and inspire their neighbours! Now entire communities are teaching each other how to segregate waste, compost at home, use our dry waste bags and bins, and are not littering or burning their waste. And of course, we are very grateful to Dharamshala’s waste workers who have trusted us and are joining our monthly learning sessions that help them understand the importance of staying safe and healthy, and collecting waste in a segregated manner.
